English 1751 Pattern Infantry Hanger, Huntingdonshire Militia
Slightly curved hanger blade with hatchet point, single narrow fuller close to the spine. Cast brass heart-shaped hilt with short quillon and two side bars, spiral grip and round pommel. No scabbard. Blade length 24½ inches (62.2cm), overall 30¼ inches (76.8cm.)
Hilt is engraved with ‘M. HUNTINGDON’, indicating issue to the Huntingdonshire Militia - almost all examples of the 1751 encountered are marked to a county militia unit – and ‘4 / 34’, most likely a rack number.
The blade has a dark patina with some speckled pitting overall, and a number of nicks to its edge. The hilt is fully intact with a dark patina to the inside and a lighter patina to the outside of the hilt and the grip, with some staining around the base of the blade.
