British Lee Enfield 1907 Pattern Bayonet, 1918 Dated by Sanderson
Straight single-fullered knife blade, steel hilt with muzzle ring, wood slab grips secured by two screws, steel beaked pommel with oil hole and locking button. Black leather No. 1 Mk 2 scabbard with steel locket & teardrop frog stud and steel chape piece.
The ricasso is stamped on one side with a crown over ‘GR’, 1907 (the pattern) ‘7 ‘18’, indicating the manufacture date of July 1918, and the maker’s mark ‘Sanderson’. On the other side it is stamped with a ‘broad arrow’ War Department stores mark, three crown inspection marks with ‘E’ from Enfield and an ‘X’ indicating that it passed a manufacturer’s bending test.
The scabbard is stamped at the throat with ‘452’, on the frog stud with ‘883’ and next to the staples on both throat and chape with ‘RE’, indicating that it was manufactured by Remington in the United States.
The blade is clean with intact blueing at the ricasso, a few small nicks to its edge, some spots of patination to the spine and grinding marks from manufacture. Some denting to the wood grip slab on one side. The scabbard leather is good with one small area of denting to the midsection on the outer side. Speckled pitting to the throat piece.
