Description

Straight single fullered, spear pointed blade with matt black parkerised finish. Straight steel hilt with muzzle ring and ball finial, steel pommel, wood scale grips attached with two rivets. Black leather scabbard with black-painted steel fittings at throat and chape, steel teardrop frog hook. Green leather belt frog.

This model fits the 6.5mm M1891 Mannlicher-Carcano rifle used in WW1 and WW2, the M1891/24 conversions used in WW2, and some late production versions of the M1891 TS carbine.

This bayonet was made for the Mannlicher-Carcano M1891 for Special Troops (Moschetto Modello 91 per Truppe Speciali). These carbine-length versions of the M1891 rifle were intended for engineers and artillerymen. The bayonets for these carbines utilised an unusual transverse locking mechanism with the locking button on the pommel, so will not fit the standard rifle.

Some references suggest that a number of TS Carbines were refurbished and parkerised for the Italian police in the 1950s, so this bayonet may have seen police use.

The blade is stamped at the ricasso on one side with ‘BRESCIA’, indicating it was manufactured at the Brescia Arsenal. The hilt is stamped with serial number ‘BE8536’. On the other side the blade is stamped with ‘MA’ within an oval. The leather of the scabbard is stamped next to the seam with the maker’s mark ‘ROCCA’.

The blade’s finish is excellent and it has no edge damage. The hilt and pommel are likewise finished black with one bright patch on the locking button. One small scrape to one of the wood grips next to the rivet. A few small dents to the leather scabbard, which has no loss of stitching. The scabbard fittings are free of dents.
