German WW2 M84/98 Mauser K98 Bayonet, Dated 1940 by F. W. Höller
Single-fullered knife blade with spear point, wood scale grips with cleaning hole and diagonal grooves, held by two screws. Steel hilt, flashguard and pommel with locking button. Steel scabbard with frog hook. Black leather frog with retaining strap. Blade just under 10 inches (25.3cm) in length, the bayonet 16¼ inches (38.6cm) overall.
The blade is stamped at the ricasso on one side with the maker’s mark ‘F.W. HOLLER’, indicating Ernst Pack & Söhne of Solingen. The ricasso on the other side is stamped with the serial number ‘5337’. The scabbard is stamped near the throat with the matching number ‘5337’, indicating an original pair. The base of the spine is stamped with the manufacture date ‘40’. The pommel is stamped with two Waffenamt eagle stamps.
The rear of the leather frog is stamped with the maker's mark 'Otto Gehrcken PINNEBURG' and the manufacture date '1942'. Gehrcken produced these frogs from 1940 to 1943.
The blade is undamaged and retains almost all of its original blueing, with notable rubbing only between the end of the fuller and the tip due to sheathing and drawing, to reveal bright steel. The hilt and pommel are likewise blued with some rubbing on raised edges. The grips are undamaged with very little wear. The scabbard is free of dents and retains its blueing, with rubbing only found beneath the frog. The leather of the frog is excellent with no loss of stitching and only light surface rubbing.
